Blossoming on the Feihlerhöhe

Improving biodiversity by introducing insect corners and appropriate mowing methods

The Feihlerhöhe is a recreational oasis right next to Purkersdorf's city centre. With a beautiful view over the Wiental to the nature park opposite, it invites visitors to relax and have a picnic.

The municipality of Purkersdorf, in cooperation with the Purkersdorf Nature Park, has submitted a project for nature-oriented development to the Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve's "15 Years-15 Projects" competition.

The project was implemented from summer 2021. Through a biodiverse and visual development of the meadow orchard, it should literally "blossom". Beneficial insects are promoted by installing an insect hotel and several deadwood areas. The species richness will be increased through the use of appropriate mowing methods (scything and also with a sheep pasture), so that there will be even more buzzing, humming and bleating there in the future.

In the summer of 2021, there were action days for scything, and in late autumn, shrubs and hedges were planted with pupils. This should also increase the interest of volunteers in maintenance. In the peripheral zones, new resting areas are being created for visitors to observe and enjoy the diversity of the meadow.

The project was funded by the association "Verein Niederösterreich-Wien - Gemeinsame Entwicklungsräume".
