Recreational oasis Feihlerhöhe

A near-natural meadow orchard in the city center on a slope between the Vienna River and Gablitzbach valleys.

The meadow orchard on the Feihlerhöhe was privately owned for a long time and foreseen for housing development. In order to avert the threat of development, the area was reclassified as grassland around 1990 and finally purchased by the municipality in 2006. Thus, the meadow and the lookout point were secured for future generations.

Recreational oasis in the city center

The Feihlerhöhe has become a recreational oasis directly in the city center. With its beautiful view over the Wiental to the nature park opposite, it invites you to relax and have a picnic.

Since 1967 there has been a monument on the hill to Josef Weinheber, who spent his childhood in Purkersdorf. Because of his great closeness to Nazi ideology, an additional plaque was erected in the course of the renovation in the fall of 2012, which sums up the dichotomy surrounding him well: „Weinheber, den großen Lyriker, zog es zu denen, die marschierten“. (i.e. "Weinheber, the great lyricist, was drawn to those who marched.")

Participative skything

The nature protection activities of the Feihlerhöhe are carried out by the team of the nature park. This includes in particular the professional and careful manual mowing of the steep meadow in order to preserve the biodiversity of the habitat.

In order to maintain the awareness of the population for the care of the cultural landscape, the nature park organizes a mowing participation event every year towards the end of May. School classes and committed citizens can learn and practice scything together under the expert guidance of a scythe master.

Furthermore, our nature park beekeeper looks after a show beehive on the Feihlerhöhe.
